First Great Tit of the Autumn

The colder weather and the stormy conditions saw a number of winter visitors on October 31st. At one point there were two Blue Tits a Coal Tit and a Great Tit at the feeders in the tree, but I couldn't get a decent picture. The birds which were here all summer have gone except for the sparrows, there are still 30 around, and Chaffinches have just arrived but yet in small numbers.

October Sunset in Arbroath

Not quite late enough in the year to get the sun setting over the sea but still a stunning skyscape. Three pictures taken without much fiddling with the settings and the other overexposed but with good effect.

Thursday 1 October 2009

I can't seem to get to Balgavies Loch when the weather, cloud and light are perfect so this will have to do just now. Photo taken using the cameras night setting on automatic and brightened slightly on the PC.

My Garden

A couple of photos below taken in my garden.
Just shows if sparrows have a place to nest (mine and Olive's roofs) plenty to eat, and can stand the predation from the local cats and sparrowhawk, they thrive. The 62 in the photo is the highest number I've counted so far.
Today I also spotted a Great Tit looking for food in my front garden, it was as if it remembered the feeder in the apple tree which has been empty for some time.
The garden spiders are now visible around the wheelie bins a bit earlier than usual, maybe it's the wet weather.

What Sparrow Shortage?

Tentsmuir Forest

Tentsmuir Forest. A walk through the north end of Tentsmuir on a humid overcast day where we found many insects active but very few birds and no mammals to be seen. Photography was hindered by the presence of Gill Marnie's dog which scared many of the subjects before photos could be taken!

Crawton Mackerel

The Mackerel are still too far from the shore other than at near high tide. There are many bait balls appearing offshore and to the north which drift southerly with the incoming tide. Either the bait balls have large amounts of small fish or few mackerel as they seem to last for quite a long time, some as long as 15 minutes. Five fish caught all of good size and with immature, 2-3 inch long sandeels in their stomachs.
