Grey Heron Fishing - the world's longest Heron blog!

How to take an inordinate number of Grey Heron photos, be ruthless in deleting many, then choosing a few to edit and post here. You'll see below that I didn't really manage the "few" bit as I couldn't bring myself to delete, or not post photos which would on another day get posted. There are four groups/themes, Eel, Poachy, Slicer and Fishing, with some where it's not doing much!

Might have a video or two but you'll be glad to know not of the Heron.......

The Herring Gulls often have a go at the Grey Herons stalking fish at danger Point

Its caught an Eel which it proceeded to shake, bash and spear until it was dead enough to swallow

The Eel even manged to tie itself in a knot in a vail attempt to get free

Dropped onto the rock so it could spear it

The Heron has now caught a Bullhead/Scorpion Fish or if you're from the fit 'o' the toon, it's a Poachy. No chance to swallow it facing in this direction

The correct orientation now

The Poachy is still alive and continuing to keep its fins erect

Just as well its throat is flexible and fills its whole neck

Part three of its "five a day" and it's a Butterfish, known locally as a Slicer

A much simpler meal than the eel and the poachy and down the hatch quickly

Various other photos of the same Heron and in better light. All photos were taken from the sea wall in front of the Old Brewhouse car park

And the last one, bet you're glad, it's a crop of the first one
