Local Wildlife in Arbroath November 2023

Some of the wildlife that can be seen in an urban setting if people create, or allow nature to develop an environment where animals can feed, roost, breed and winter.

My current garden Fox, thought to be a rural fox due to its very wary nature, click here for video

I'm not 100% sure that this Fox visiting my garden is a Vixen as foxes are difficult to sex, I confirmed a previous Vixen in spring when it was seen to be lactating. This Fox is a new one with different markings compared to the Vixen of the last 3-4 years

There were 5-6 Grey Herons at Keptie Pond in the west end of Arbroath, these two were helpfully standing in a pose and very still in the cold conditions

Five drake Goosanders on the pond but no females

There's always a Black-headed Gull standing watch at Keptie and is the first to see people with food, it's good to see that most of the food is now seeds and greens, instead of bread which isn't good for the wildlife or the ecology of the pond

A very dark looking Moorhen, reflecting the cold and dark sky just as another sleet shower arrived

Still two cygnets with the adult Mute Swans

Not so many Wigeon and a bit wary, I wonder if something, or someone has spooked them

A young lad (that used to be me) was fishing near the foghorn at Arbroath harbour, and he had a small creel lowered over the sea wall. I watched as he gingerly tried to pick up a crab from the creel so I showed him how to pick it up, and released back into the sea. This Turnstone was eating another crab nearby which I think was also from the creel, another he couldn't catch

Not so many Rock Pipits about just now, I wonder if the big storms moved them elsewhere. As with other winters I'll have to look up Scandinavian Rock Pipits versus UK variant

....and just as dusk was arriving I managed a photo of a Tree Sparrow in my garden, I counted 14 of them on Sunday, the highest count so far this winter
