I've been feeding a small flock of Fieldfares in my garden and late on Saturday afternoon while topping up the apple supply, I caught a view of a flock of 30 Waxwings. Immediately I got coat and camera and traced the whole flock to trees at the end of my road, I counted 54 Waxwings!
Photography wasn't easy, there was little light left in the low sun and the birds were feeding in the shade of a narrow front garden. I decided I'd never get a "killer" photo and took a few flight shots before the light became useless.
To my amazement they were still around on Sunday morning, I thought 54 birds would have demolished the berries on the small tree they were feeding on.
Photo from Saturday taken in late afternoon and only possible when the Waxwings flew higher than the houses into the remaining low sunlight
Every now and again the birds would take off from the small Rowan type bush in someone's front garden and fly around, these couldn't be bothered and landed on the nearest street light
These two photos were taken on Sunday morning when there was no sun and it was getting windy
Not long after this as I walked back to my house, a flock containing more than half of the Waxwings flew in a loose formation towards the "Glens" area near Arbroath Academy. Eleven Waxwings were later found opposite Wardykes Primary School which is the opposite direction in Brechin Road
