On Tuesday, there was little activity at Montrose Basin. The gulls were trying to steal crabs from the Eiders, but the other ducks were absent, and very few waders could be seen.
A quick visit to Mains of Usan saw me hiding at a byre to escape the cold wind blowing in from the sea. A male Kestrel was hunting near the derelict buildings, but flew away before I could get my camera out of the car.
I gave up due to the cold and rain, and the lack of birds.
This Curlew flew into the shingle at Montrose railway Bridge with a small crab already in it's beak
Three photos of a young Herring Gull, I've no idea why it deliberately landed on the older gull
The Herring Gulls were hanging around a small flock of Eider, some of which were fishing and catching crabs. None were successful while I watched in stealing from the re-surfacing Eiders
I think the white area seen to the left is a diving Eider trying to get away from the crab thief
A bit of courtship and calling going on, yet they probably won't nest for some time
A pair of Rooks have found my fat ball feeder and so far haven't been put off by noisy neighbours
I was just able to get the Rooks in the frame and despite the photos being through the double glazing I didn't lose much quality
Yellowhammer in the straw of a cow byre at Mains of Usan
Some of around 18 were feeding at the farm
I didn't need to go to Usan for Yellowhammers, up to seven are visiting my garden. Unfortunately a male Sparrowhawk has returned, or maybe didn't leave, the cheeky raptor sat in a small bush at the top of my small garden while I filled a feeder only 6 metres away. It only flew away when I turned to fill another feeder near it.
