After at least five years of attempts, Herons have managed to hatch 3 chicks on the island at Keptie Pond, on a very low nest at the waters edge. More on them in an upcoming post when I get photos and videos sorted out.
I've included other birds from Keptie here, including "Gay Mallards", a very grumpy Swan, and the Pintail/Mallard hybrid.
Heron chicks, there are three, looks like dinosaurs are still amongst us!
What Mallard drakes do when they run out of females but not testosterone
The Pintail/Mallard hybrid is still around, and I didn't see any of his female cohorts
One of the pair of Mute Swans has disappeared
Lesser black-backed Gull, recently seen taking a Mallard duckling, as do Herring Gulls, and perhaps the Soft Shell Turtle, which wasn't considered when it was released into the pond
Herring Gull
Moorhen
Juvenile Coot
Mallard still with 8 ducklings, for how long? The Swan threatened them when I was there, the mother quickly rushed at the Swan and the ducklings managed to get into cover
